J1 Visa Health Insurance - Overview


J1 Visa Health Insurance is a mandatory requirement by the US Department of State. Exchange visitors, scholars, au-pairs, trainees, post graduate research students and all other J1 visa insurance holders are required to have valid J1 visa health insurance in order to keep their J visa valid per the J1 visa requirements. J1 visa health insurance plan benefits include coverage for medical expenses, evacuation, and repatriation.


J1 Visa Insurance - Program Specifications & Details


J1 visa holders (J1 exchange program participant) and their dependents (J2 visa holder) are required to have medical insurance coverage with the following minimum benefits .

  • Medical insurance benefits of at least $50,000 per accident or illness. The J1 visa Insurance or Exchange Visitor Health Insurance policies must provide medical benefits of at least $50,000 for each accident or illness, and an acceptable policy cannot have maximum lower than US $50,000 in benefits for each accident or illness.
  • Medical evacuation benefit of US $10,000, the amount the plan should cover you if because of a serious illness or injury, the J1 visa holder must be sent to home country on the advice of a doctor.
  • Repatriation of remains in the amount of $7,500 (in case of accidental death of J- visa holder, the amount the policy must provide in repatriation benefits to send the mortal remains to the home country for burial)
Also, the plan deductible should not exceed US $500 per accident or illness. Sponsors are to require that their participants (and any dependents entering the United States as holders of a J-2 visa) have insurance in effect during the period of time they are in the sponsor's program. An insurance policy secured to meet the benefits requirements must be underwritten by an insurance corporation with an A.M. Best rating of "A-" or above, an Insurance Solvency International, Ltd. (ISI) rating of "A-I" or above, a Standard and Poor's Claims Paying Ability rating of "A-" or above, or a Weiss Research, Inc. rating of B+ or above. Alternatively, the sponsor may ascertain that the participant's policy is backed by the full faith and credit of the government of the exchange visitor's home country.

Program regulations also discuss coverage through HMOs and self-insurance of the above requirements by federal, state or local government agencies, state colleges and universities, and public community colleges, if permitted by law.
